Some proposals start with a walk in a garden. This one started with a helicopter. On a bright June morning we lifted off and flew over green valleys, waterfalls and lakes, climbing higher and higher until the meadows gave way to rock, ice and snow. Our destination: the Petersgrat, a wide glacier plateau at around 3,200 metres in the Bernese Oberland, and one of the few places in Switzerland where a helicopter is allowed to land on the glacier.
Up there the world feels very quiet. Deep blue sky, fresh snow under your feet, and a panorama of the Swiss Alps in every direction. He had planned everything down to the last detail. A few steps away from the helicopter, with the peaks lined up behind them, he turned to her, said a few words that only she heard, and went down on one knee in the snow.
Her reaction said everything: hands over her face, tears, laughter, and then a very long hug. After that we simply let them enjoy the moment. We walked across the glacier for portraits against the mountains, took close-ups of the ring, and finished with a glass of champagne next to the red helicopter before flying back down into the valley.
A helicopter glacier proposal is one of the most unforgettable ways to ask the question in Switzerland. It needs good planning, the right weather window and a bit of flexibility, but the result is a memory, and a set of photographs, like nothing else.
